שגריר ארה”ב בישראל, דן שפירו ביקר במרכז סינדיאן בקלנסואה. השגריר סייר במקום ולאחר מכן הוצג לו המיזם  معاً / ביחד /  Together פעילות משותפת של יהודים וערבים לשינוי בעולמם של ילדים ובוגרים עם מוגבלות בתמיכת הסוכנות לפיתוח בינלאומי של ארה”ב (US AID). שפירו נוכח לגלות בסיור שדווקא מתוך הקשיים המשותפים נולדת קירבה מיוחדת ושוברת מחיצות בין ערבים ליהודים שמתמודדים עם אתגרים דומים. במסגרת הפרויקטים נפתחו קבוצות מנהיגות הורים משותפות, תכנית מנהיגות נוער ופרויקט של קלינאיות תקשורת, גננות והורים לכתיבת סיפורי ילדים מותאמים לילדים עם מוגבלות בגיל הרך בשפות הערבית ועברית. בביקור נכח גם עבד אלבאסט סלאמה – ראש עיריית קלנסואה שהבטיח להקצות קרקע להקמת מבנה חדש עבור המרכז על מנת שירחיב את פעילותו.

במפגשים ההורים הסירו מחיצות ושיתפו בדעות הקדומות. חדיג’ה- ” אנחנו ההורים הערבים חשבנו שלהורים היהודים מגישים הכול על השולחן ולמדנו שיש לנו את אותן זכויות ואותן התמודדויות. מיכה גרונברג, סיפר שבמפגשים שהתקיימו במקביל להסלמה הביטחונית בשנה שעברה הופתע לגלות שהעובדת הסוציאלית , אמאל, מגיעה למפגש בליווי של אבא שלה, כשבררתי למה הבנתי שגם הערבים פוחדים מהאלימות היהודית ותחושת חוסר הביטחון שווה לשני הצדדים.

מדבריו של השגריר:

“I want to say thank you….in this government we have taken important steps forward on the issue of rights of people with disabilities. It was once not understood that the goal needs to be full rights, full participation and of course provision of all services that are necessary for that part of our population. But it is also a question of rights. And when those rights are fully realized and respected it is a benefit to everybody, not just to those individuals but to all our society. We are very committed to finding partners of the same mind. Of course that has led us to get to know and be so impressed by the work of Beit Issie Shapiro.

When we had a real opportunity to join forces in partnership with you in this [USAID funded] program it was something really special to us. … Everything we have heard about this program has been just as moving and impressive and personal as I have heard described and now seen with my own eyes here today. It is an honor, and it is a furtherance of our values we share with Israelis of every background. And as much as it’s about first and foremost the families and the children and the rights of those people, it has become something else, it has become something that has brought parts of the society together who didn’t know each other and did feel distance and distrust and fear, and have that found common language on the what is the most important thing in the world, their children.

So, we really hope this is the beginning of a partnership, I know this USAID grant is concluded but that doesn’t mean it’s the end of the partnership. This visit and many other continuing contacts will enable us to continue to be partners and as you grow and expand what you are doing throughout Israel.
