who attended this significant award
ceremony at the Israeli Parliament,
the Knesset. In attendance were
Minister of Education, Rabbi Shai
Piron, whose son has received services
from Beit Issie Shapiro, and MK Karin
Elharar Hartstein, who herself uses
a wheelchair and has been at the
forefront of legislation on behalf of
children with disabilities in Israel.
Some 35 years ago, the late Issie
Shapiro first took Willie Trump and his
family around Israel to show them the
conditions of people with disabilities
that then existed in the State of Israel.
Since then, with the help of the Trump
family, much progress has been made.
Together, the Trumps and Beit Issie
Shapiro have changed the way that
children with disabilities are included
in society. In his speech, Jules Trump
noted the excitement of knowing that
Beit Issie Shapiro’s hard work now
means that “children of every type [are]
playing together, enjoying together,
and enjoying the wonderful benefits
that this wonderful country has to
offer”. Sixteen years after the very first
Chesed Award was given to the late
Willie Trump z”l, the Chesed Award
came full circle as generations of the
Trump family graciously bestowed the
Award on others.
